Miss Lady Mo Speaks: The Sweet and Lowdown of A Beauty Guru

I had a few readers email me recently asking to hear a bit more on the day in the life of *Miss Thang, aka Me! I scoured the internet looking for pertinent questions and found some both beauty related as well as lifestyle related. Btw if you weren't aware, I'm going to switch things up and cover a bit more than beauty! Why? Because I feel like it!

*Fun fact: while working at Meier and Frank, now Macy's, a friend of mine helped a woman who's last name was "Thang". Being that we used to get our asses chopped up and fed to us if we didn't thank the customer by name and just being a good bitch, he promptly smiled and said, "Thank you Miss Thang!". And then we all laughed...

1. Hails From: Eugene, Oregon. I could say Salem, Oregon as that was where I went to grade school thru highschool, but when I was thinking about it, I've lived here longer. So yeah.. Eugene, Oregon!

2. What's your favorite vacation spot or summer getaway place? Being that I'm a broke bitch, I'm going to go with two choices. The first is my realistic vacation: I'm going to LA in May to see my pseudo boyfriend Scott. Why pseudo? Nosy! We've been friends for 11 1/2 years now and just recently realized that we should've been together this entire time. So yeah. Going to stay with him and visit some old pals of mine and also figure out if I want to move there. Why do I count this as a vacation? Because it's the first time I've ever been away from my kiddo and my dogs and pretty much all my responsibilities. That, my friend, is a vacay! Oh and I think we are going to try to take the Sharon Tate tour with my buddy Scott Michaels "Dearly Departed: Tragical History Tour". I'm a huge fan of LA history, especially true crime. So this definitely floats my boat!!
My fantasy vacation would probably be somewhere in the South Pacific or somewhere exotic like Tanzania or Goa. The art historian in me would love to go to Greece or back to Paris or Florence. So basically I have a giant bucket list!

3. Tell us the thing you love most about your blog: Writing a blog started out as just a fun diversion when my daughter was a baby and I was losing my mind. I had seen and become friends with some awesome beauty gurus on YouTube and thought that it would be fun to share my decade + years of experience. Being an artist and a skincare educator is something that I'm good at and I especially love looking for the best products but also the best buys! You don't have to break the bank to be beautiful, but you do have to be persistent!

4. Finish this sentence "I really hate"…. Ooh this is kinda a two parter. I really hate when people refuse to educate themselves on taking care of their skin and would rather depend on their makeup to take care of it for them. If you have great skin, you will have less to cover! I also hate it when the same people are willing to pay $50+ for makeup but balk at paying more than $15 for skincare. It should be the other way around. If you're on a major budget, you can still take care of your skin. There are so many options out there plus you can acquire some big name brands for a fraction of the price if you shop at TJ Maxx, Amazon and EBay. This would be the persistence part. Do not accept any any less than the best! Makeup trends come and go, your skin is what you have for your entire life!

5. What's the craziest beauty trend you can recall? Probably the half shaved head with the other half remaining long. Very few people can carry that off and very few people did.

6. What's the best old-school product line and why? Estée Lauder or Shiseido. They both deliver what they claim. Estée is where I started out and instantly my skin was transformed from acne that would not leave to smooth, glowing skin. Shiseido is a line I also started using in the late 90's. The skincare lines combine aroma therapy with hydration and correction. If you've never had a Shiseido facial massage, you are missing out! They usually have these events a few times a year and are complimentary with a purchase of a couple skincare items. You'll make out way better than going to a spa since you get to take your goodies home! A lot of times, beauty advisors will book you for a facial massage even if they aren't in an event, so call and ask!!!

7. What about the best newbie brand? For skincare I'd say the "Yes to" like (carrots, blueberries, tomato, etc. I've only used a few products but am very pleasantly surprised!
For makeup it's a toss up between Be A Bombshell cosmetics and Salty Cosmetics. I've been really impressed with the pigment and quality of all their products so far. Be A Bombshell sent me some goodies to review last year and I've been devoted ever since! Their felt tip liquid liner is my holy grail liner! Salty has amazing loose shadows and lip products. I haven't used as many from them, but what I have used has really impressed me! Their Glamazoid loose shadow is a staple for all my fashion shows!

8. What innovations in the beauty industry are you excited about? These aren't really new but I'm really wanting to get a Brazilian keratin treatment for my hair and I'd love to try eyelash extensions!

9. What's the best beauty secret you've learned from a pro or someone in the industry? Always use eye cream!! The younger you start, the better! I'm 37 and can attest that it is true!!! My pal Millie at Lancôme schooled me on this one night when we closed together. I was 22. I learned quick! My favorite eye creams are Renutriv Intensive Lifting eye cream by Estée Lauder, Benefiance eye cream by Shiseido and Eye Doctor by Origins.

10. What's the best beauty secret you discovered on your own and still use? I have 2. The first is if you have a major breakout, use self tanner on your face (or body). Most self tanners for the face have salicilic acid that clears the skin overnight and you also get a gorgeous glow! Lancôme Flash Bronzer for face also has vitamin E to help cushion and repair the skin and is the product I recommend the most!
My second beauty tip I discovered on my own is to use lip balm to combat fly aways. It ain't inventing the wheel, but it works! Take the balm and rub on clean palms, rub hands together and run through hair where the fly aways are.

11. What can we find in your medicine cabinet? In lieu of a medicine cabinet, I have an actual tester unit from Shiseido given to me by my dear friend Leana aka The Russian. On said tester unit are the following: all my nail polishes, a cache of fragrance samples, St. Ives Spray Coconut Milk and Tahitian Flower Lotion, Dillon's Candy Bar Red Licorice body butter, Coco Eau de Parfum, Hypnotic Poison body lotion, a couple Ardell false lashes and Duo glue, Lancôme Flash Bronzer face, Marulla Oil from the Leakey Collection, brow kit from Chella, hair claw from Goody and Unite 7 Seconds Leave In Conditioner.

12. What about in the cosmetics bag  in your purse? Watermelon Lip Smackers, Fresh Sugar Lip Balm, "Born With It", "Plumtastic", "Fuchsia Flash" all Maybelline Lipstick and Maybelline Color Whisper "Lust For Blush", "Gypsy" NARS lipstick, "One True Kiss" EM lipstick, MICA "Nude" tinted balm, "Nude Beach" gloss from Be A Bombshell, "Summer Sweetheart" MAC Lipglass, Benefit's "Watts Up" highlighter, beauty blender, L'oreal True Match foundation, Chanel Brow Pencil in "Auburn", Q-tips, Wet N Wild's "Reserve Your Cabana" bronzer, "In Love" blush from Chanel. I own the clown car version of makeup bags.

13. What's your lipstick of choice? I'm so fickle when it comes to lipstick and gloss, but the two I would say I use the most are Gypsy by NARS and Plumtastic from Maybelline. Those are the ones I always keep in my purse because they instantly liven up my face, especially when I go makeup free, they both just make me look more polished.

14. What's your fragrance of choice? I am a self admitted product junky and that certainly doesn't stop at fragrances! My signature scent is Coco from Chanel, the original not Mademoiselle or Noir. I also love Hypnotic Poison and am using the body lotion this winter. The lotion gives a veil of fragrance without knocking you out. I've also been enjoying my Marchesa Body Mist. I got the fragrance as a deluxe Sephora sample and was smitten! I also really love Little Black Dress from Guerlain, also introduced vis a sample. In the summertime I like sweet scents and go crazy for Comptoir Sud Pacifique Vanille Abricot. My fave thing is to mix it with Coco for a more sweet and spicy scent. Japanese Cherry Blossom is another go to. That's what I use more on the daily, but in lotion form.

15. What's your position on plastic surgery, yay or nay? I'm all about it for other people, but I'm not a huge fan for myself. After having my daughter, though, I would love to have a breast lift. Anyone who has big boobs and breast fed knows what I'm talking about. They don't look like puppies in a sack yet, but the idea is to prevent that look!

16. If you could impart one bit of advice to our young readers on their beauty routines or good habits to adopt, what would it be? Im a broken record, so I'm going to have to go with taking care of your skin. Use a serum, moisturizer, eye cream and a good exfoliator and mask. Stay out of the sun and for gods sake, remove your makeup before going to bed! Companies have made this task easy for the lazy and the drunks, use a makeup removing cloth!

17. Current obsessions? Probably the new cream blushes from Maybelline, true crime documentaries like Wicked Attraction, Solved, Dissapeared and Dateline repeats; I am obsessed with Dr. Pepper in a very unhealthy way. Nothing comes close! I've also been snacking on this mix called Ranch Hand Mix from Mountain Snacks. It has pumpkin seeds, sunflower seeds, corn nuts, sesame sticks and those orange spicy rice crackers they have in the Oriental Rice Snacks.
