Silent Film Glam: Renee Adoree and Marie Prevost tribute!

A couple posts ago I showed off a tribute to Theda Bara and last year I spotlighted my homage to Barbara LaMarr, today I wanted to pay respects to a couple of ladies that time has all but forgot: Renee Adoree and Marie Prevost. What set's this look apart from other looks of the 1920's, is the smokey eye and filled in lip. They do the bee stung lip well, but it's more of a wearable, full lip look as opposed to the puckered, overdone style, relied on by some makeup artists like a crutch. I'm no one trick pony!

Marie Prevost was born in Canada and came to stardom in Hollywood via Mack Sennett's Bathing Beauties. She was a true beauty and like most true beauties, she had a lot of inner demons that eventually took over, ending her life at an early age. What is more dismissive and frankly, disrespectful is the rumors surrounding her life. Both Kenneth Anger and Nick Lowe helped perpetrate the rumor that when she died, her dachshund survived by eating her. Yeah, didn't happen, but as we know with late celebrities (Mama Cass anyone), everyone loves a macabre punchline instead of the truth.
I want people to see her in a different light, a true beauty and the perfect silent film glamour girl!

When Jeanne de la Fonte was given her screen name, a star was "reborn" and "adored". Renee Adoree, a french born actress, grew up in a family who's parents were circus performers. She started performing in an acting troupe as a teenager and fled to London at the dawn of WWI and later to New York City. After dating for 6 weeks, she married fellow actor Tom Moore and moved to Beverly Hill's. Adoree's marriage didn't last, but it brought her to Hollywood's attention and she became a singular sensation on the silver screen.
When studio's shifted to sound, unlike many of her peers, her voice was good enough to translate and broaden a new chapter of her career. She would go on to star next to legends like John Gilbert, Lon Chaney, Lillian Gish, Norma Shearer and Ramon Novarro.
Renee Adoree was another actress of the day that died too soon, passing away from tuberculosis at 35. Damn.

I like this look because it looks exotic but it takes very few steps to get this look.
I started off by applying Benefit's Bronze Have More Fun Creasless Cream Eyeshadow all over the lid and into the crease. This is super lightweight, almost a gel/cream consistency that goes on super light weight.
Taking the same shadow but applying with a skinny liner brush, apply to the lower lash line to the inner corner.
I also used Chella's Ivory Lace brow highlighter on the brow bone but now realize I didn't get the photo, so just go with it!

I am all about Wet N Wild! Laugh if you want at the Chanel girl who loves Wet N Wild, but this look was achieved with their Comfort Zone palette and looks amazing! I used the defining shade on the bottom right side, sort of a dual chrome teal, gray, khaki, in the inner corner of the eye. I wanted to create sort of an ombré look, so I swept the shadow from the inner corner, part of the lid and then up to the inner crease. I also took an eye liner brush and apply the same color to the lower inner lash line as well.
I applyed the golden brow bone shade on the upper left hand side of the palette, with my finger tip, tapping it into the brow bone. I don't like a frosted coating to the brow bone, which is why I chose to not use a brush. Tapping it into the Ivory Lace crayon highlighter, gives a little bit of lift but doesn't make the skin look crepey.

Jordana's Denim Blue eyeliner is such a multipurpose product, especially for the brown eyed girls out there! The deep navy really defines the eyes while brightening them up. It doesn't scream "blue eyeliner" either, not that there's anything wrong with that ;)
I lined the waterline of the lower lash line, tight lining the upper lash line. It really gives drama that is super simple, without making the eyes look small.
One of my new favorite foundations is from Maybelline. I've spoken of Fit Me foundation before, but this is seriously all I use. I like that it gives great coverage, warms up my complexion and evens it out. It truly reminds me of Prescriptives Virtual Skin, in terms of shade range, texture and weight. It let's the skin breathe and feels truly weightless!
I used a stippling brush to apply foundation #201, to even out the skin tone.

After foundation, I used Benefit's Fake Up concealer on the dark circles I've had from my insomnia stint. Ladies, if you have dry under eyes AND dark circles, please get to the Benefit website...NOW! I love the soothing texture and hydration from the balm portion of the concealer. You will get adjustable coverage and creaseless moisture, this will be my winter concealer for sure! I'm actually down to the nub of my first tube, Benefit, can you hook a girl up?
I set my foundation and concealer with Sue Devitt's Triple C Seaweed Pressed Powder. This is a matte powder that gives even coverage without looking cakey or chalky, which is key for the under eyes.
Benefit makes another appearance on my face, this time in the form of Hervana, a complexion brightening powder. Much like MAC's Crew powder from their Hey Sailor line, it gives a sheer bright color to the cheeks. Sheer color lends an ethereal quality to the skin, a trademark of the film actresses of the 20's and early 30's.
To get a bit of contour, I used the Hoola bronzer from, you guessed it: Benefit!
This is a matte chocolate bronzer that you truly get a natural contour from, but also enhances the skin. Trust me, it's fabulous!

I'm officially a Chella fan! I love their brow products! I've been using their brow pencil and clear brow groomer for months now and they truly give the best brow. The pencil has a very fine tip, making it easy to get the most definition possible.
The clear grooming gel goes on invisible. I've used some that leave a gummy, rubber cement residue. Not cute. Chella has found a way to get a perfectly groomed brow without looking too defined, it looks like it comes naturally. Sneaky Chella! I love when perfection looks and is truly easy peasy and they have it in spades. Do you feel that Anastasia? That's Chella breathing down your neck! Checkmate homegirl!

The silent screen starlet lip is key to the look, so much so that even the men wore lipstick back then. You couldn't hear them speaking so seeing them enunciate with a bold lip was key.
To create this look, I steered away from the bee stung Clara Bow look and went for a more wearable, classic lip that both Renee and Marie rocked well.
I used another Jordana liner, this time for the lips and in Sedona Red. It is a classic red. Normally I don't go there with red liner and demure to a nude, even with red lips, but I wanted a precise line and to make the color last longer. After sketching the frame of the lip, I filled the entire lip with Sedona red.
Truly, this color is phenomenal enough that you could get away with using the liner as a matte lipstick, but Urban Decay has a fabulous new line of lipsticks that make the lips look so lush and pillowy, they scream, "kiss me you fool!". Well, here's hoping at least ;) F-Bomb is a color I used in my Strong Brows and Lips post and is so beautiful, you want to wear it everyday! My models looked so breathtaking, it inspired me to use this in other looks, so that anyone else could truly wear it everyday.
Red lips tell the world that you are confident and secure. No wussy comes out of the house in a red lip and there is a red for everyone! No excuses, I challenge each of you to wear red lipstick for an entire week! Watch how differently you carry yourself and act. Trust me on this!
This entire look took me only 12 minutes to apply, from start to finish. This is not a difficult look, it's the rich hues of the shadow combined with the liner that give it depth and timelessness. For the cherry on top, I used Tartes Lights, Camera, Flashes mascara. I am growing to really enjoy this mascara. It does take more work to get the thick, full fringe that Benefit's They're Real gives me, but LFC defines each lash, so that if you want a more natural look that perfects length and separation, this is for you.

Stay tuned for some new looks! If you have any look requests, product review requests or if you are a company that would like to get in contact with me, please email me at mo9191976@aol.com!

See ya!
