Skincare For Dummies

This might be a series because I keep coming across a lot of
*stupidity on YouTube, the internet and in my daily life. Not
just regular stupidity because that's just life. No, I'm talking about skincare stupidity.

There are a lot of layers of stupidity when it comes to skincare. You have the people that boast that they won't spend more than
$10 on skincare and complain that their skin is their skin
resembles bubble wrap that has been stepped on with a poo coveredshoe. Then there are people that just don't know how to even use
skincare.
Today I am focusing on people who do not know how to use or applyskincare.

Since this is the firstinstallment of SkincareFor Dummies, I'm just
going to cover basic
skincare: cleansers,
toners, eye cream and
moisturizer.
Let's start off with
cleansers and toners...

If you have dry skin, use a cream cleanser or a
lotion based cleanser. If the packaging is for
oil control do not use this. Your skin is dry!
Why create more problems by using a product that specifically says "Oil Control"? You'd think
this is common sense, but I have seen a lot of
friends use products that they have no business using.
Exhibit A: a friend who we will call Mr. X. Now Mr. X has sensitive skin that is very dry and
flaky. After washing my hands in his restroom, Inoticed he was using a Neutrogena cleanser for acne control and
toning with Sea Breeze! Jesus! He could have saved money and justdipped his face in lye! Neutrogena cleansers are pretty harsh in general but following it up with Sea Breeze, no wonder he had
patchy, red skin!

Read the ingredients. If the main ingredients are alcohol and
salicylic acid, please do not use this!
So you say, "Yeah I have dry skin, but I don't want to get
zits!". No one wants zits darling.
Think about it. No really, think about it.

People with dry skin that use products for acne prone skin or
"zit zapper's",is the same as being lactose intolerant and eatinga block of cheddar cheese.
Hormones also play a big role in the zit lottery. Pregnancy,
losing or gaining a lot of weight or certain medicine can
sometimes cause a major hormonal shit show.

Do not sleep with makeup on!That's a no brainer, yet people still do it, then wonder why their skin resembles a pot of chili simmering on the stove. You get bonus points for knowing to remove eye makeup separately. Logic dictates that repeated use of cleanser
at a time will dry your skin out. You will save yourself a lot ofgrief if you remove makeup prior to cleansing.

The same rules apply for oily or combination skin. It's very rare than people truly have oily skin past their teens. Over cleansing and over drying oily is a lesson in futility. Using every
product under the sun for oil control will actually strip the
skin of natural oils meant to keep your moisture barrier intact. What happens is that your skin will now produce more oil to
compensate for all of the over cleansing, resulting in tight,
flaky skin with lovely mountain ranges of pimples.
Find a gentle foaming cleanser and use it in the evening after
removing your makeup. This will remove any excess makeup left
behind by towelettes.

If you aren't using makeup removing towelettes and simply
cleansing until the makeup is gone, cleanse once and follow up
with a toner instead. This will take care of cleaning up anythingleft behind by your cleanser.
This next tip is something I recommend for all skintypes. Washingyour face with a cleanser in the morning is completely
unnecessary. Unless you live in a smokey or dirt filled home, you do not need to strip it with a cleanser. Solution? Simply use
toner on a cotton pad and sweep over the face.

Dior makes an amazing cleansing water (which is one
step up from a toner). If you want to splurge and are insistent on using a full on cleanser, use the cleansing water or a lotion based cleanser. No need to foam, girl!
Here's the thing with eye creams and moisturizers, while you can use eye cream all over the face (true but very spendy), face moisturizer is just for the face. No, my skeptical Mary's, this isn't a case of greedy companies putting the same products in different containers all to bamboozle the general public. The skin around the eye area is very thin and fragile, so heavy fragrance, alpha or beta hydroxy and sometimes even having an SPF can be no good.

To apply eye cream, take a small amount, a little smaller than
the size of a pea (which is enough for BOTH eyes. I.E. half pea per eye)and apply ONLY to the orbital bone. The orbital bone is
the structure surrounding the eye. Tap gently on the orbital boneand do NOT take down to the lid or up to lower lash line. Eye
creams are very emollient and your body heat will make it travel. If the emphasis of application is too close to the eye, it'll
fuck up your makeup or worse, irritate your eyes.

Face cream. I feel silly having to tell people not to apply this near the eyes but after watching a few YouTube gurus blab about
how their face moisturizer made their under eyes really dry and
flaky, I'm gonna have to go there.
Broken record time: Do NOT use your face moisturizer as an eye
cream. It ISN'T meant for that tender of skin. You ARE NOT doing yourself any favors and can possibly cause more damage. PLEASE,
DO NOT!!!

To apply your moisturizer TO YOUR FACE, I find that the 5 dot
method works like a charm. Take a touch larger than pea size and place one dot on forehead, bridge of the nose, and finally, one
on each cheek. Gently massage into skin AVOIDING THE EYE AREA.
This is all the moisturizer you should need. Don't apply more
just because you feel dry. If you still feel dry, I recommend
using a more emollient moisturizer. I am also a believer in serums and oils used before moisturizer, but I want to cover just the basics in this post.
Hopefully this has clarified basic skin care methods and
application. Everyone's skin is unique but these guidelines are
very universal.
If you are following basic skincare smarts you shouldn't be
getting breakouts or have extra dry & tight skin.
P.S. This blog post is meant to entertain, gently scold but
ultimately make you laugh while learning the tricks of the trade.Smile. That's the best trick ever and it's free ;)
*Btw speaking of stupidity, the format looks like crapola! My computer is still out of commission so I'm writing all my blogs on my iPhone. Hence the odd format/breaks. It's driving me nuts to be perfectly frank. Anyway, wash your makeup off before bed! Xoxo
