Natalie Wood has long been a beauty idol of mine, what with her poise, charisma, impishness and simplicity. She didn't need more than eyeliner, mascara and red lipstick and she was good to go glam!
Since it's been ages since I did a Cheap and Chic, I thought this was the perfect opportunity to pay homage to the beauty herself without busting up my already brokedown wallet ;)
This look has probably been the least complicated, yet one of the most chic. As always, photos are arranged right to left. Ex: top left step 1, top right step 2, bottom left step 3 and bottom right step 4.
Start by priming the eye with NYX Jumbo Pencil in Milk, concentrating on the brow bone and lash line. Blend with your fingertip, as the warmth of your finger will give the best and brightest coverage.
For this look, we will be using Wet N' Wild's trio in Walking On Eggshells. Wet N Wild is pretty much genius in their shadows. They are not only labeled like a paint by number palette, but the pigment is the bomb.
Using the caramel color, apply to the crease, following the natural crease/eye socket. It will look like a half moon when you've done it correctly. Next, use the pale peach pink shade on the lid, but take care to pat on all over the lid and then buff gently into the crease with a fluffy brush. For the last bit of shadow application, I like to use an eyeliner brush and trace below the brow with the white gold shade in the palette. Once finished, I use the caramel color on the same brush and apply below lower lash line.
For liner, we're going to use Jordana's Fabuliner in black. All we are doing is tracing along the lash line, nearly brushing into the lashes. We're not making it a cat eye, simply enhancing the lash line. I like to slightly flick out at the end as well, to give it a lift. This line technique will not only frame your eyes, but make your eyes look wide and lashes will look lush.
For the finishing touches, I used Maybellines Fit foundation in W201. This is a truly amazing foundation. I have never gone back to Maybelline foundations since they looked like I had a tomato on my face back in '92. This is a new age of foundations and Maybelline has filled to void where Prescriptives Virtual Skin once was. Yes, you read that right! This gives weightless coverage and lets the skin breathe, all the while smoothing the pores and evening out rough or redness areas, but above all, it just looks healthy.
I finished with Maybelline Fit pressed powder in 201 also, to give a matte look all over, so that the areas I choose to highlight, will come alive.
For lips I used Jordana lip liner in Sedona Red. Lord have mercy this is a true Hollywood red. Please buy it. Now. I simply lined my lips, filled in with the same pencil and added a lip balm from Dermstore on top and voila: Red lip butter. Hydrated lips look fuller and more appealing, so if you'd rather use a straight up liptick and liner, make sure the lipstick is very hydrating and not matte.
For highlighting purposes, I used Hard Candy's bronzer in Tiki. As I stated in a previous blog, Tiki is a dupe for The Balm's MaryLou-Manizer, but less dosh. I apply my highlighter to center of my forehead, down the bridge of my nose, cupids bow and top's of cheek's. This way you look glowy, not greasy :)
For blush, I used Wet N Wild's Berry Shimmer and dusted on top of the outer cheek bones, blending upwards in a half moon shape or a "U" shape. You will start on top of the cheekbone (from middle of cheekbone or last bit of cheekbone, depending on your comfort level with a deeper blush), buff in circular motions down in the hollow of the cheeks , then up towards the hairline- or in my case, pseudo sideburns. This also creates a lift while giving the deep blush an innocent, yet polished look.
This is just one interpretation of the iconic Natalie Wood look. For a softer look check out my friend Emily's YouTube tutorial http://youtu.be/he9quKhsCbc
