One of my favorite YouTubers, Jack from Vivalaglamour4, inspired me with a video with his take on this already legendary look from the 2013 Golden Globes. He is a magician and sly as a fox, you MUST check him out: http://www.youtube.com/user/vivalaglamour4.
I wanted to do an alternate to her Golden Globes look, more minimalist and what I call the "Mom of a 1 year old that hasn't given up but is tired as hell" look. For you non parents out there, call it Spring Coral Chic...
If you just read my empties blog, you'll know my skin is remarkably improved, clear and radiant and because of this I wanted to keep my skin as even and clear as possible so all that was used was moisturizer and Maybelline Dream Lumi in Radiant. I applied the concealer to the under eyes, center of the nose and in a "check mark" look starting on the side of the nose, diagonal line under cheek bone and then diagonally applied up to the side of the face. This will offer some coverage, but also acts as a highlight to the high points of the face. I used brushes to apply, however, because I'm wanting a softer look, I used the warmth of my fingertips to pat and blend. Powder and all the other bells and whistles will come later, so never you fear.
I used the same concealer as a shadow base. This concealer is great for a base because it dries to a semi-matte finish but is bright and clear, so theoretically you could set with translucent powder or Brulee from Wet N Wild for a very natural look. For the shadow, I used one of my go to's: ELF Blush/Bronzer duo. The soft warm brown of the bronzer portion is satiny and is patted under the crease, out to the corner and along the lash line. Next take the apricot color of the blush and pat from the inner corner and blended into the crease. This needs to look seamless, so take care using a clean fluffy brush to buff the shadow.
Using Jordana's Fabuliner in black, follow the natural lashline, drawing a thin-medium thick line, starting a fingertips width from the inner corner. This line starts thin and graduates to a medium thickness. This isn't a dramatic look so when you finish the line, flick up the edge very lightly. This will give such a pretty bright eyed look, very fresh but still defined. Because it is more of a minimal approach to this look, I kept liner and mascara concentrated to the top of the lashes. I lied. I did a light coating of The Balms Body Builder on the lower lash to comb away any concealer or shadow fallout.
Eyebrows are penciled in with Chanel's Brow Pencil in Auburn with soft strokes and groomed softly as well.
I used the Palladio loose rice powder lightly on the face to set the concealer but also to even out the contrast of the concealer to the face. Using my beloved Veronica's Blush from MAC, I used it as a powder highlight to the bridge of the nose, lower orbital bone, center of forehead, temples and cupids bow.
For blush I used Chanel's In Love on top of the apples of the cheeks. Because I wanted this look to really spotlight the skin, the blush is applied starting in the middle of the cheek bones, atop the apple and stippled outward and upward towards the temple hairline. This last portion needs to be blended properly so that the color is concentrated on the cheek and not the side of the head. I am a blending junky so a clean kabuki brush is perfect for this look.
Now onto lips!!! I used an Illamasqua liner in Thrash to softly define the lips and Fresh's Sugar lip balm to moisturize.
Betty Bright was a lipstick that from MAC's storied Archie's Girls collection. It was Jack, in fact, that inspired me to get this lipstick. He swatched it and it practically jumped off his hand, but when he mentioned the Jessica Alba Golden Globe look, rocking a similar lip, I stalked my MAC pal, Meghan and hooked it up. Coral's always look amazing on me, but this is more of a pinky coral which can go the sad trombone route: wah, wah, waaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaahhhhhhhh. Thankfully it looks happy and just like spring gave me a smooch. Thank you Jack! You were right!
And the final look?
Ta-da!!!!! I love this look and I just love how happy it makes me when I see it in the rearview mirror. I've also had more of those amazing compliments like "You look so healthy", "you are glowing! You look so happy!", etc. And for a 36 year old mother of a teething 1 1/2 year old, that is the most magical compliment you can get when you haven't had a decent night's sleep in over a year and a half ;)
As always, click the links below to purchase any or all of the products I used. I get a pittance of commission when you do, but I'm a single mom and every little bit helps :)
If you want to check out the video that got me hooked on the Archies Girls and Mr. Jack, here ya go! http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_Q0SioeCg-4 and tell him that Mo sent you!!!
