How To Achieve Flawless Long Lasting Fake Tan
Fake tan is healthiest, quickest and most cost effective option for getting an instant healthy glow all year round, and if the right measures are taken it can last a long time before needing a top up!
It’s All in the Preparation
A flawless and long lasting tan is easily achievable if you prepare your skin properly beforehand. Because the tan’s color is designed to cling to the very top layer of your skin, ensuring your skin is prepared before application is vital to the lifespan of your tan.
The very top layer of your skin can often contain a mixture of dead skin cells and fresh ones, and when we exfoliate we rub away the dead skin cells to leave a full layer of brand new ones. So it makes sense to exfoliate a few days before you apply fake tan as there will be a smooth and clean layer of skin for the color to cling and the your tan will stick around for longer as it is not being applied to already dead skin cells waiting to be brushed away.
As well as exfoliating, moisturizing regularly will help to ensure flawless application when tanning, and will also help to prolong the life of the top layer of skin which holds your tan. Skin absorbs moisture and the dryer it is the more it will absorb, therefore drier areas will absorb more tan than the less dry areas, creating patches. Pay extra attention when moisturizing to areas prone to dryness, commonly elbows, knees, feet and knuckles to ensure no dark patches appear when your tan’s color develops.
Flawless Finish
When the time comes to apply your fake tan, be sure you have all the right tools. A self tanning mitt is the number one essential tool for avoiding orange hands and ensuring a smooth and streak free application. Some people choose to use gloves, but with the mitt you avoid spreading your fingers when applying the tan, a common cause of streaks.
Having a secret weapon at the ready for hard to reach areas can be a god send, so grab yourself some cling film and when it comes to reaching your back and shoulders simply pop some tanning lotion in the middle of a large piece of cling film and rub your back in the same way you would if you were drying your back with a towel.
Don’t scrimp when it comes to how much tanning lotion you use. Its a common misconception that too much lotion causes the Tangoed look and streaks, but in fact it is the use of too little lotion that has this effect. Trying to spread the tan too thin will lead to areas having more color than others and dark/light patches, streaks and other flaws.
Keep It Up
There are various steps and precautions you can take to keep you tan looking fresh and glowing for as long as possible between applications. The easiest steps to take is avoid exfoliating until you are ready to apply again, and try to avoid water where possible, e.g. don’t go swimming.
You can also moisturize regularly to keep the skin’s moisture topped up, but be careful to avoid oil or butter based moisturizers as these will remove the tan quicker. A great way to keep it topped up and moisturize is to use a light gradual tanning moisturizer as this will gradually add color to the tan and can be used every day.
